So a visit to the offending pet store revealed not only two new cockatiels, but more neglect. I had to inform the management that the lights were never turned on in the bird cages, or rather prison boxes. The one I targeted was one I know actually cares, but tends to aquatic life, not avian. He went to see and to remedy the situation immediately. Kudos to you, and you know who you are.
So, Robert, the bird who does not like to be touched, is antisocial and bites, has had an exciting week. He has learned that "necklace chewing" is a fun sport. He has learned that if he perches in the center of his cage and calls out in a sweet little cry, I will scoop him out to freedom. He is still unable to balance or perch upon my hand. I guess that is a skill we need to work on once he trusts me more. Robert has learned to p,ay. He scoots up really close and makes like he wants a cuddle, then just as I am about to gather him up, he lets out a playful squeak and zips just out of reach. This is repeated until it is too much for him, and then he climbs up into my hands, aiming of course for"the necklace."
Robert is learning to socialize with Screech, our pearl pied cockatiel. She is a little unnerved, because we are "HER" people. But she taught him that when the plate come out, there is a special treat. Robert now loves raisin bran flakes. He tastes the Rice Krispies, but loves the flakes better. Since this is all new for him, we take it all in stride. Soon he will try fruits and veggies too.
Robert has about an hour of tolerance for being held. He likes to be held tightly, (but not too tight) against your chest, and his magic skritching spot is right behind his head. He is in bird nirvana when he gets skritched there, closes his eyes and chirps.
Robert is content to be out and about as long as I am nearby, otherwise he screams. He always signals when he has had enough, and is such a good boy. seething at the pet store because now they are neglecting and damaging more birds. Robert LOVES millet, something they told me he couldn't stand. Anyway, he is thriving here, and every day is more progress. Stay tuned folks!
